Ski Boot Fitting Guide

1. PROPER FOOT MEASUREMENT.

You should have your feet measured on a Brannock Foot Measuring Device before buying any footwear. Any store that sells footwear should have one of these devices. This is the best way to get an accurate measurement, because most manufacturers base their sizes on this device. You should be fit with a thin ski sock for ski boots and a heavily padded sock for snowboard boots. Have the person measuring your feet to give you an arch length measurement (heel-to-ball) as well as the more common heel-to-toe measurement.

2. SKI BOOTS.

The arch length measurement is important for properly sizing ski boots. Figure 2 shows two feet, which are the same length, but each requires a different boot size. Correct fitting properly positions the ball joint in the boot and provides room for the toes so they are not confined. If you fail to properly size your feet, you will be lucky not to have problems with high performance ski boots. Boots should have enough room for you to wiggle your toes, while the rest of the boot fits snuggly.

3.. SNOWBOARD BOOTS. The arch length measurement is important for properly sizing snowboard boots. Figure 2 shows two feet, which are the same length, but each requires a different boot size. Snowboard boots are designed to flex slightly at the ball of the foot. Correct fitting properly positions the ball joint in the boot and provides room for the toes so they are not confined. If you fail to properly size your feet, you will be lucky not to have problems with high performance snowboard boots. Boots should have enough room for you to wiggle your toes, while the rest of the boot fits snuggly.

4. PROFESSIONAL FITTING. You should have a MasterFit certified technician, like we have here at Mel Cotton’s, fit you into a boot. Every manufacturer and boot style has a unique fit profile. It doesn’t do a lot of good to shop around for the boot with the features and look that you like when it is the fit that will determine which boot is right for you. Our technicians will measure every detail of your feet to find the boots that fit you correctly. Then you can choose the styles and features that you want from those boots. We also offer additional services such as custom insoles and boot modifications that are detailed on our services page.
